HMB: Who May Benefit and What the Research Shows

HMB, or beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate, is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine. It has been studied for its potential role in reducing muscle protein breakdown and supporting recovery.

What the evidence suggests

The strongest benefits tend to appear in untrained people, older adults or situations involving muscle loss or unusually high training stress. Results in experienced resistance-trained athletes are more mixed.

How to use it in practice

Around 3 g per day is common in research, often split across the day. It should be viewed as an optional addition after training, protein, calories and recovery are already well managed.

What to check on the label

  • Check whether the label states calcium HMB or free-acid HMB.
  • Compare the amount of actual HMB per daily serving.
  • Do not confuse capsule weight with active HMB amount.

Safety and context

HMB is generally well tolerated at common research doses, but anyone with medical conditions should discuss supplementation with a healthcare professional.
